Student Data Privacy

This page explains how student information is handled within the EmpowerLit magazine submission process.

Student information is collected only when a teacher submits student work for the magazine. The fields collected today are: student first name, grade, school name, the submitted work, submission type, the monthly issue and theme, and submission status.

Participating in the EmpowerLit magazine is completely optional. Schools and teachers can use EmpowerLit Schools without submitting student work for publication, and students do not need to participate in the magazine to participate in EmpowerLit lessons.

Submitting student work does not automatically make it public. EmpowerLit reviews submissions, and only selected work is published in the public magazine.

A teacher submits student work on behalf of a student. EmpowerLit's Super Admin reviews the submission. If selected, the submission is approved for an upcoming public issue. Once that issue goes live, the work becomes visible in the public magazine. Submissions that are not chosen are not published.

Published work uses the student's first name, grade, and school name. Example: Sam — Grade 5 — Sunrise Drive Elementary. We do not collect or display a student's last name or last initial.

Before a teacher submits student work for the first time, they will be asked to complete a one-time confirmation.

The teacher will confirm:

☐ I understand and confirm that my school follows its district policies and obtains any required permission before submitting student work for possible public publication.

Once this confirmation has been completed, teachers will not be asked again unless the policy is updated.

Participating schools are responsible for following their own district policies and obtaining any required parent, guardian, or school permission before submitting student work.

The student, or the original creator of the work, keeps ownership of it. By submitting, the school gives EmpowerLit permission to review, format, display, publish, promote, and archive the submitted work.

A parent, guardian, or authorized school representative may request that published student work be removed. See our Data Removal Request page for how to do this.
